2011 Spring & Summer News Letter

President

Well we made it thru another cold and long winter. Your board has been working very hard all fall and winter, and doing an excellent job as you will read below in their reports

I would like to thank Terry Jenks for the pile of snow, and to Parker Seiler and his little Elves who transformed that pile into an ice sculpter of a man and his car for our winter picnic.

Stan Watkins, Rodger Shutter, Cy Judson, Craig Cotterman, and myself will be collecting bugs in the streams above our lake next week (and again in the fall) for the Muskegon Watershed monitoring program that tells the health of our for lakes and streams Also this fall we will test water quality of our lake. We also will be talking to DNR about Geese on our lake.

We have installed new sign next to boat ramp gate. (Thanks Frank Yakes)

A special thanks to the crew (elves) who show up every time we ask and go far beyond volunterring. If you would like to help---let us know

Let us know what you think on our website @ASK THE BOARD

I encourage everyone to read our property restrictions that are posted on our web site www.lakejamesmi.org as there are several property owners in violation.

Thanks Larry Bittner

Vice President

Is spring here? Well anyway, the Lake Ice is gone and a nice group of migrating Ducks and Birds are around for us to enjoy watching.

The Board has been busy doing Association Business, checking Insurance Premiums & policies, planning the 2011 functions thru out the coming year and trying to stay on top of things, which is a busy process.

Association Dues are on schedule with the past year of being paid, despite this bad economy. We are having a lot of New Owners on the lake and we wish to welcome them. Also, I'm hoping some will get involved with all the Volunteer work and even some as well getting on the Board.

Record keeping and computer work are going smoothly, incorporating some changes as we go forward. Thank you for all your co-operation.

Thanks Rodger Shutter

WEEDS

Well, here we go, spring is here, or is it? It seems like every time I get ready to start my yard work it snows or rains heavily. Guess I'll just have to wait it out. Spring will eventually get here, none too soon as far as I am concerned.

The bad part is, with spring comes "WEEDS" we have to put up with them in our lawns and don't forget in our lake also. We can handle the lawn weeds with a little bit of raking and an application of phosphorous free weed & feed but the Lake is a different problem, although its handled just about the same way as our lawn, it requires professional services. Aquatic weeds can be controlled. This year we have a new Aquatic Weed control company, "Savin Lake Services" with offices in Hale and Clare. We've been in touch periodically over the winter and believe me, they're ready to go. All permits have been acquired and a lake survey will be scheduled as soon as weather and water temperatures will permit. As before, I will be present during the survey to point out areas of concern. Mr. Guy Savin, the company President, has assured "me/us" that we will have a beautiful lake once again. So get out there and get the yard work started, Lake James is in good hands.

PARKS

SPRING IS HERE, AT LAST! Time for Spring Clean-up! On Saturday, May 14th, we are having our Annual Spring Clean-up. We need volunteers to help. Bring you rakes, gloves and clean- up tools and join us. Meet at 9:00 a.m at the boat ramp. Then join everyone at the pole barn for a barbeque. Also, look for improvements in the parks this summer. A new playscape will be going up in one of the parks. Keep your eyes open for this new addition.

FISH

Fishing Report. Well maybe spring has arrived which means activity on the lake will be picking up. Just a few reminders, even thought Lake James is considered a private lake, when it comes to fishing we still have to abide by the rules and guide lines of the DNRE. It is your responsibility to know these rules and fish accordingly. We still have a voluntary catch and release on our bass. If you want to keep one to eat, keep the smaller ones and let the bigger ones go. We do have a lot of other fish that are real good to eat. Also last October we planted Walleye in our lake most of them around 10 inches. If you catch one please be careful putting it back as not to harm it. We will be having another plant this fall; we will be trying to really get a good population of Walleye in our lake to make it fun to catch them but better to eat. If you have any questions or concerns please let me know by e-mail. My e-mail address is garyk2452@yahoo.com. If you do catch any walleye I sure would like to know just so we can see how they are doing. Thanks and have a safe and great summer.

EVENTS

SPRING HAS SPRUNG, we think. Regardless, we have spring on our minds and of course the Annual Spring clean-up. After you volunteer to help clean our parks. Come join everyone at the pole barn for a barbeque.

If spring is here, summer is not too far behind. Summer brings the 4th of July and our annual boat parade and picnic. It is not too early to begin planning your boat's theme. Remember to pre-register your boat by emailing jkrantzie@aol.com or calling Jane at 989-366-0975. Pre-registering saves everyone time on parade day. In addition to the First Place Trophy, this year more prizes will be awarded. Looking forward to the BEST parade ever.
