Visitor Recognition:

Al Walker was present at the meeting and took a few minutes to remind the board that Randy Stevenson (currently running for Sherriff) has supported the LJPOA Marine Patrol. Randy was involved in the set up of the Marine Patrol and has advised that if elected, he will continue to support our efforts on Lake James. Although Randy has supported the LJPOA Marine Patrol, neither the LJPOA or the LJPOA Board support or take position on any political or public office candidate.

New Business

On October 19, 2008, the boards will be removed from the dam to bring the water level down to its winter leve

The Winter Picnic is scheduled for January 24, 2009. In preparation for the event, buoys and caution tape will be set up at the barn delineating a path from the lake to the snowmobile parking area. Additionally, Jane Tomaszewski will be responsible for organizing food and other items for the picnic. Gary Varco will be responsible for selling 50/50 Raffle tickets to support the fish fund.

The 2009 Spring Clean Up @ LJPOA is scheduled for May 2, 2009. A list of clean up areas will be established as in years past. Additionally, Dan Nelson will check into the financial feasibility of renting a chipper for the day which could possibly be used to assist PO’s around the lake in brush and branch removal. Also on this day, the dock at Moosehead Park will be installed.

A Fall/Winter Newsletter will be published. Jim Van Vonderen will gather input from all Board report areas including Parks, Fish, Dam and Aquatic Weed Management. Reports/articles are due prior to November 15, 2008. Jim will establish a draft to be discussed at the November, 2008 LJPOA board meeting.

LJPOA board members will pick up used picnic tables at the dump for $20/each. The tables will be repaired and placed in our parks and at the barn.

The sign at the boat launch will list an alternative contact number and include Rodger Shutter. Rodger will assist in the area in Jim Preczewski’ absence.

  • A 2009 “Wish List” will be established for the LJPOA board to review. This wish list will include ideas on valued added services to be provided to PO’s. Some ideas are:
  • Event signs – Dan Nelson to get updated pricing
  • Shuffle Board court
  • Bass Tournament – Catch & Release
  • Bocci Ball
  • Horse Shoe pits
  • LJPOA Garage Sale at the Barn
  • “Adopt a Table” at the Park

Fish Management:
Jim Preczewski provided the wish list items to be considered for 2009. We will ask the Tom Hayes if it is possible to set up a survey on our LJPOA website to find out what is desired most by LJPO’s.

Parks Management:
Gary Varco was not present but in his absence, Dorothy Yakes reported that Imlay City Fish Farm was out on October 11, 2008 and planted the following fish into our lake (per our fish management report):

  • 400 Bluegill – 4” to 6” length
  • 200 Large Mouth Bass – 6” to 8” length
  • 27 Gallons Golden Shiner Minnows

Total cost of fish including delivery was $3,000.

Aquatic Weed Management:
With the application of Renovate OTF, LJ had to recognize the entire 120 day watering ban. Due to weather, chemical dilution and dissipation did not take place more rapidly. The manufacturer of Renovate OTF wanted to take water samples at a cost to LJPO’s of $400. We declined as we were within three weeks from the end of the watering ban. In spring of 2009, we will evaluate and determine what chemicals will be used in our lake treatment efforts on Lake James for 2009.

Dan Nelson advised that we received permission from the DEQ to combine Lake James 1 & 2, saving on permit costs.

Dan Nelson advised that he is working with Eunice Malcho to establish a lake management plan. Chemical applications, weevils and other non-chemical alternatives will be evaluated.

Dan Nelson advised that he will be investigating and researching alternative lily pad control alternatives.

Dan Nelson suggested that LJPOA repair a chain saw owned by the association. This chain saw will be used on annual lake clean up days rather than renting a saw.

  • Motion made by Rodger Shutter have Brian’s Small Engine Repair fix the chain saw.
  • Motion second by Dorothy Yakes
  • Board Motion Vote: I’s: All Nays: -0-

Old Business:

LJPO feedback was shared with the board regarding the August, 2008 Annual Meeting. The comments were mixed but consensus was that the meeting was productive. Other comments included:

  • Need for “alternative” board members
  • To long with to many “dissertations”!

After covering all agenda items, motion was made to adjourn.

  • Motion made by Dan Nelson to adjourn the meeting.
  • Motion second by Jim Preczewski
  • Board Motion Vote: I’s: All Nays: -0-

The October, 2009 LJPOA board meeting adjourned at 12:55 PM.

The next regularly scheduled board meeting will be on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at Dorothy Yakes home.
